In the Samvat year 1856 on the fifth day of the bright half of the month of Paush, Shreeji Maharaj was seated on a wooden bedstead laid in the veranda in front of the hall facing the east in the Durbar of Dada Khachar in Gadhada. He had put a white headdress on His head. He had put on a white jacket and white trousers. He had tied a saffron colored rich garment with golden borders round His waist. Saints and devotees from various places had gathered before Him in an assembly.
Then mercifully Shreeji Maharaj started His talks with the saints and said, “The book of Vasudev Mahatmya is very dear to me because therein is described the method of worshipping God in full details. Devotees of God are of two kinds. One has a firm faith in God. But his mind is attached to his physical body. The other considers his real Self to be spiritual entity as distinct from the three kinds of bodies: sthool, sookshma and karan: physical, subtle and causal] in all the three states of consciousness: jagrat, swapna, and sushupti i.e. wakeful, dreams and dreamless sleep. He visualizes his Sex to be very bright. And within that bright luster he visualizes the divine image of God and warships Him. He visualizes the divine image of God as revealed to him in person.
A true devotee of God should attain such a state of mind and as long as he does not attain such a state of mind, he is in the danger of falling from his spiritual level inspite of the fact that he is a true devotee of God. Shivji had not attained such a state of mind. So he was lured by the charms of Mohini; Brahma was attracted towards Sarasvati. Naradji had a desire to many; Indra got a bad name, and Chandra-the moon got a blemish on his face on that account. However great a devotee may be, if he has not attained such a state of mind, he is likely to ascribe human qualities in God.
King Pareekshit was not such a devotee of God. so he became suspicious about Lord Krishna on hearing the episode of Raas-Kreeda [a sportive dance in company of the
cowherd damsels of vrundavan]. Shukji was such a devotee of God, so he did not become suspicious about the Lord. Such a devotee is always confident that he cannot be subject to any evil influence, nothing can disturb his mind. Then how can any worldly failings be found in the Lord Himself by whose grace he had attained such a state of mind? The devotee has a firm conviction that no fault can be found in the Lord. When such a
devotee h e s his mind on the divine image of God, his mind is divided into two. One part is directed towards God, and the other towards the devotee himself. The part that is directed towards God is full of love. The other is full of conflicting thoughts. Such a state of mind drives out all thoughts other than those regarding God from His mind, and removes all vices from his mind. Thus the devotee is able to fix his mind on the divine image of God continuously. But if the devotee is wavering i.e. one moment he worships God and the next moment he is engrossed in worldly matters, he will never be able to concentrate his mind constantly on God.
If we pour a jar full of water in a pit one day. and another jar on the next day, and another on the third day. the water so poured will not be able to MI1 the pit. The water poured one day will dry up the next day. But even a small stream of the size of the little finger flowing constantly will be able to fill a bigger pit lo the brim. In the same manner one should fix his mind continuously on God even while eating, drinking, moving, walking and doing all sorts of good or bad activities. By keeping one’s mind so constantly engaged in thoughts about God, one will gradually be able to attain that steady state of mind.
